The Love Muffin and I have been planning to get rid of our hideous closet doors in our guest room, but haven’t picked replacements yet. I’ve been looking for some sleeker, more stylized options…

But then Walter Allen came over this evening and suggested a different direction. What about removing the doors completely and leaving it open? On the plus side, it would add some space to the room. On the negative side, it would reveal everything… including the pole for hanging clothes, which I’m not such a fan of.

Walter Allen’s arguement is that it’s a guest room, so we won’t be storing anything in there anyway. He thinks with nice looking hardware for the pole, and maybe some pretty pillows stacked on the shelf, it might actually add to the look of the room.

Empty closet

Closed closet doors

So, here’s the big question from renovation headquarters: what would you do? Sliding doors? Or remove them?
And if you were to remove them, would you frame it out somehow? Or paint the inside a different color/ different shade than the rest of the room? Frame it out with birch branches? Line the inside with bamboo strips? The field is wide open!  I’d love to hear your creative ideas!

I am having this very same issue in our office and have yet to figure out a plan!! :) I can’t wait to hear what ideas you get!
I think if it were my room, I’d want doors…but I don’t know. :) Part of me would want to put in something like this:
    http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100495426&categoryID=2950
But I just don’t know. :) Or maybe just something like this?
    http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100387977&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&PID=500871&URL=http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BuildLinkToHomeDepot?linktype=product&id=100387977&cpncode=08-46210424-2&AID=10368321&cj=true&srccode=cii_9324560
Also, this site has some great doors: http://www.trustile.com/

However, I love your idea of making it its own space too, w/o the doors!!
I really like something like this too..it would be functional and beautiful (from Cottage Living):

Or even something like this, minus the chair?? (from Crate and Barrel):

Is there a luckier mom than ? Thank you, Sweetie, for all the yellows and blues and whites and for knowing your mom so well! And thank you for being you - a major gift in my life. Bussis!!

I love the idea of shelving it out to make it more of a desk/work space, but it looks like the room door smacks right into the closet/possible living space. Plus, I don’t know if you could/should totally do away with hanging space for your guests. You could do a multi-paned glass door which would still open up the space and showcase decorative pillows, etc. yet one is able to “close out the clutter”. If there were no door, I might feel like I was living in my closet if it were still used as a closet. Plus totally doing away with the closet space might affect the resale value (one day). But you know me, too practical for my own good, probably. Whimsy is not my strong suit.

Thank you guys so much! Jenn - Another fantastic blog post with a super insightful answer…

And Suzie, I loved your “book” of a response :-) Filled with great references! Nice to know that whichever way I go, there are lots of options.

Anastasia, I’m liking the glass panes idea too… Some of the options Suzie posted were along those lines, and I think I’m gravitating to those. Resale value is definitely on our minds too, although I htink it would be easy enough for a new buyer to slap doors on if we went door-less…

How about curtains? I have a thing about most closet doors (purely personal taste) and so usually take them out and replace them with a curtain. It doesn’t take up any space, it’s easy to get into the closet and can be another decorative element in the room.

Plus - it’s cheaper than most other options!

    Hi Barb,

Great suggestion! And that’s probably a great way to bring added color and texture to a room.

Thanks so much for stopping in… As always, I love your blog!
